Trip information:

Near the town of Mwinilunga in north western Zambia is the famous Kaleni Hills. It is 48 kilometres away from these hills that the mighty Zambezi derives its water. This source starts with tiny bubbles between roots of a small tree. The older tree falls down and is replaced by a younger one. The water from the spring does not flow away, but sinks into an underground river which outcrops 10 metres away.

The second spring also sinks down, appearing 30 metres down the slope. There the river flows on the surface and becomes wider and larger as it covers more distance. The river is large and powerful 48 kilometres down stream and cuts into rocks to form the tempestuous Zambezi Rapids near the border with Angola. It then enters Angola for about 300 kilometres.

The Zambezi Floodplain, Barotseland, Zambia:

After leaving the Angolan border, the river re-enters Zambia near the town of Chavuma, forming the Chavuma Falls. This marks the end of its upper course. From the upper course, the Zambezi Falls is only about 180 metres from a distance of over 800 kilometres (500 miles).

Then the Zambezi River enters and meanders in the Barotse Floodplain for about 190 kilometres. The Barotse Floodplain is the site of the world famous Ku-omboka traditional ceremony. Ku-omboka, meaning 'leaving the flooded plain for higher ground', and occurs during the rainy season in February/March.

After leaving the floodplain, the Zambezi pours its large volume of water over the Ngonya Falls. For the next 100 kilometres (60 miles), below its confluence with the Kwando River, the Zambezi is a large, smooth flowing channel.
